Klaus Kolb's second volume of his memoirs continues his life story from age 12 until he comes of age. His father is imprisoned and the family's East German apartment and goods are confiscated by their Soviet occupiers after World War II. Thanks to CARE packages and hard work in mechanical engineering school, the extended family of his grandmother, mother and two sisters survive by cramming into Grandma's apartment with another couple. Klaus discovers his musical talents but his partying has consequences. When his father is released from prison, the men make a hard decision that could leave the women defenseless.
