This book fills a gap in the current resources for students of Augustine's Confessions . It presents the Latin text of the first four books, including grammatical and rhetorical introductions, vocabulary glosses, and grammatical and interpretive notes. The scope and method are intended for readers encountering the Confessions in Latin for the first time?whether high school or college students, scholars in the humanities outside of Classics, or other non-specialist readers. Greek and Latin philology and classical education have long privileged classical pagan authors to the neglect of early Christian ones. This lack of attention is felt most keenly at the level of aids for intermediate students. While the Classics profession has shifted towards greater inclusion of Late Antique and early Christian authors, at least at the level of scholarly activity, the provision of corresponding aids for Classics students lags behind. This book will thus serve as a vital educational tool for all persons engaged in studying and teaching the Confessions in Latin.
