Cook county, 7th district, is a lawyer by profession and an Englishman by birth. He was born in the county of Norfolk, England, June 20, 1838, and was brought to this country by his parents when a lad of ten years. The family settled in Cook county, Illinois, where Senator Humphrey received a common school education. He read law in the othee of Hon. James P. Root, and was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1872.
