According to the 1940 census the total population was largely settled on the coastal plain. Crescent City, the county seat and largest community, had in 1940 a population of NO railroad enters Del Norte County, but there is an airfield near Crescent City. U. S. Highway 101 follows the coast, and U. S. Highway 199 connects Crescent City with Grants Pass, which lies 87 miles to the northeast and is the commercial center and railroad shipping point for much of the region. During the last decade the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Forest Service have built many miles Of forest road, but large parts of the county are still remote from any road.
