This book provides a comprehensive, systematic and in-depth investigation of ancient Chinese sports of ethnic minorities. It is based on the key state-funded project 'Ancient Chinese Sports Projects' by an academic research team led by Jinxiang Bai, a prominent professor on sports history and minorities studies in China. From a historical perspective, this book applies the research methods of philology, archaeology, ethnology and folklore to cover 100 sports that are classified into nine categories, including ball skills, running jump shots, tactics, martial arts and health, riding, dancing, games, water, ice and snow, chess and cards. For each sport, it provides an in-depth description of its development, evolution, regulation, activity methods, forms, characters, memorabilia, scope of communication, cultural narrative and relevant forms of communication. This approach represents an extension of conventional studies on the sports of China's ethnic minorities, and provides a kaleidoscopic view on China's ethnic minorities as well as their sports and cultures.
