The USS Northampton CC-1 was part of the U.S. Government's plan whereby the President of the United States could be evacuated in the event of a nuclear attack (1960–1970). The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Representatives could reach any ship, aircraft or station in the world to direct U.S. military forces.
The sea stories are mostly truth filled with humor and reality during the Vietnam Era. The stories begin with 'President Lyndon B. Johnson's Dining Table', continue with the experiences of what it was like as a midshipman and conclude with a plan to provide for the 'continuity of the United States Government during an all-out nuclear war in the 2020 era'.
Humor in the stories is like looking at the 'good side' of life with a positive attitude. The stories, in conjunction with a 'Timeline of World Events', places the midshipmen and later Navy and Marine Corps Officers on a journey within the reality of the bigger picture during the 1962 to 1989 years.
The First Lieutenant of the USS Northampton CC-1 briefed us in the N-B-C drill (Nuclear-Biological-Chemical Warfare Drill) that the only thing that might remain would be our shadow left on the bulkhead.
