Born profoundly retarded in 1954, starved of oxygen, my sister Dreama is vegetative. What follows is my family''s story in words which Dreama cannot say. Her remarkable survival required extreme family sacrifices. While my father devoted his life to keeping Dreama alive, he inspired me to excel despite suffering. Unable to cope with the awesome burden of caring for a disabled daughter who would be a child forever, my mother turned her rage on me. Her insanity drove her to beat me bloody as a child and later to emotionally attack me. I never broke. At age twenty-one, I was a graduate of The Virginia Military Institute and served as a special operations officer in the Vietnam War. After law school, I eventually rose to the grade of colonel in the Air Force Reserve and served as chief JAG for a major U.S. intelligence agency. I became a U.S. judge. Our parents are gone, but over fifty years later, I remain my sister''s keeper. If the triumphs of faith and will described in this unique book save even one family or inspire one child, it is a success. Read with compassion. Feel the pain and the triumphs.
